Orval, perhaps the most talked about Trappist beer in the world.
And not without reason! A unique Trappist, with a very unique taste!
The beer that has been brewed since 1931 to finance the reconstruction of the Abbey of Orval grew into an icon.
Orval produces only one beer to sell, a high fermentation beer with secondary fermentation in the bottle.
A unique beer naturally comes with a legend, and it cannot be missing from Orval either.
The legend starts with Countess Mathilde of Tuscany. Mathilde, a widow, accidentally dropped her wedding ring into the well of the valley; she begged God for help, and it was not long before a trout surfaced with the precious ring in his mouth. Mathilde then exclaimed “This is really a golden valley!” (Orval, “val d’or” means “golden valley”) and she decided, in gratitude, to found a monastery in this blessed place.
Orval was born …
Recognizable in the label is the trout with the ring in its mouth.
In the meantime it has made me thirsty ….
