The Nijmegen brewery Nevel is known for its beers with wild yeasts.
After maturing in oak wooden barrels for 14 months, this Grondslag gets its unique taste.
Grondslag is a rich beer that has been on wood for an average of 14 months. The tender acids are supported by notes of tropical fruit and citrus peel.
Despite the long aging, the wood character is fairly mild and the hop bitters are still clearly present.
A minimal foam head is perfectly normal!
As Nevel describes the beer itself: “GrondslagBasis is composed of our oldest beers, the brews that started our story. Placed on wooden barrel and slowly forgotten until it was time to harvest them. Grondslag is a way to experience how wood-aged beers naturally taste: the pure beer without herbs or fruit, but also without carbonation. This is how the beautiful texture of the beer comes into its own. Grondslag is close to our core, a beer that demonstrates the power of blending and the purity of maturing. ”
